The Iris’ project... why it was not put into practice : contribution to the history of a publishing venture

Demetrios Schinas was born in Constantinople. His basic studies in Bucharest, Paris, Geneva and Pavia, succeeded his medical post graduate studies –funded by Frederic North, 5th Earl of Guilford– in London,where he moved in 1818. In 1819, Schinas, in cooperation with the publisher John Murray and supported by Frederic North, ventured the publication of a monthly Modern Greek journal, aspired to be titled Ίρις ή τα νυν Ελληνικά (=Iris, or the present state of the affairs of the Greece)– however unsuccessfully. Main purpose of this journal would be «tÔmake the Friends of Greek Nation acquainted with the present state ofthe Knowledge amongst them, and with their endeavours for theirregeneration». The present article attempts to examine, evaluate andinterpret all available relevant information. In addition, it attempts toshed light and evaluate the opinions that have been demonstrated,concerning Andreas Moustoxydis’ participation in the publication of are levant advertisement, as well as the correlation between the journal and the Ionian Academy.
