The Comic Element in the Fragments of Aristophanes : A Preliminary Approach

Aristophanes’ plays are the only surviving complete examples of OldAttic Comedy, although some thirty three fragments of the lost comediesthrough the treatises of ancient scholars, mainly grammarians, survive.Valuable information can be drawn from these fragments, whichalongside commentary-types of Alexandrian works as well as other testimonieson titulature shed light on the dramatic craftmanship and theveracity of his portrayal. Accurate acquaintance with the history andconstitution of Athens, with public events and proceedings, whether theybe political or social, with matters pertaining to education and artisticproduction, with parodies of rituals and myths might be expected fromthe citizens of a democratic republic, and all these aspects of life arereflected in the surviving fragments. Drawing any conclusions from sofragmentary a work is no mean feat, since the scholar has to have theknowledge, drive and methodology to deal with relatively difficult textssuch as any type of comic fragments, in order to contextualize their readingsagainst the background for each scene, supplement the missing text,and draw any similarities and differences between these and similar passages.But, to omit these fragments from the study of Aristophanic comedywould be to deprive it of certain aspects of the artistic grandeur ofthe poet, and without them the entertainment might have fallen flat.
