Abstract:
The article deals with the dating of Ippias, an important dramatic work written in Italian, by Andreas Kalvos, one of the major Greek poets o f the modern times. Based on previous research on the domain, the article traces all the different theories dcvcloppcd by Mario Vitti, G.Th. Zoras, Bruno Lavagnini and other important scholars specialized on ncohellenic poetry concerning the dates of the writing of the three dramas Ippias, Theramenis and Danaides by Kalvos. Following these scholars the drama was written during the years 1813 -1816, period in which the poet lived in Florence, or 1820-1821 when he stayed again in the same town. New evidence brought up in the article elucidate the matter and propose that the final writing of Ippias by Kalvos was interrupted by the events of the outbreak of the Greek Revolution of 1821 and his decision to abandon the Italian in his writings and dedicate himself to writing only in Greek.
