Abstract:
Τhis article presents the ceramic material from a well in Piraeus, which came to light in 1982 during a salvage excavation by the 2nd Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities. The most impressive find is a red-figured chous of the late fifth century, stylistically pointing to the tradition of the Eretria Painter. It depicts a youth followed by a lamb and an older man. The scene mostpossibly indicates a sacrificial procession, portrayed in a rather unique iconographie way. Comparable scenes are not known from contemporary choes. Except for the chous, the well revealed a large number of black-glazed fragments of fine quality, mostly belonging to drinking shapes. Vessels of everyday use are limited, but loom weights and lamps came to light. The majority of the finds dates to the last quarter of the 5th century B.C, while there are very few fragments pointing to the 4 th . The study of the discovered pottery suggests that the well must have been in use from the first decades of the fifth century before being abandoned during its last quarter. The fourth-century finds are isolated and probably come from the upper fills.
