The calculation of the height of the columns of the temple of “Athena” in Karthaia

The calculation of the precise height of the columns of the temple of“Athena”, in Karthaia, Keos island, has been supported by new evidence during recent restoration of this temple. The findings related to the columns of the temple are:a) In the west side to the temple are preserved in situ the lower drums of nine columns. In one o f them there is also the second drum (position W4)b) one slightly smaller drum, clearly nor in situ, was laid in position W7c) one large fragment of capital andd) several small fragments.The plan of the temple has been well preserved and the axial spacing of the columns is clearly visible. The accurate measurements of the drums make clear that the correct place for the smaller drum (in position W7) is right above the larger surviving part of the column position W4. From this observation results that for the first time a part of the column larger than its half (almost 3/5) can be observed and in relation with the dimensions of the surviving capital the calculation of the total height of the column can be estimated with accuracy. The proportions of the column after this study are similar to the column proportions of other ancient buildings of the same period (end o f 6th cent. B.C.).
