Exceptional burial assemblages from the Agora at Aegae (Vergina) II : Examination at the laboratory

Abstract:
New data resulted from the investigation of the funerary assemblage discovered at Vergina in 2008: the black substance on the interior surface of the bronze cover of the large cist encompassing the burial was identified as bitumen, whereas traces of mineralized fabric were observed on the external surface of the golden pyxis. Additionally, analysis of the golden wreath indicated that it was made of gold of high purity. The burial assemblage found in the same area in 2009 consisted of two compressed and fragmented silver vessels affected by corrosion: a hydria and a panathenaic amphora with gilt ornaments. The finds demanded once again a meticulous approach in the laboratory. A microexcavation was conducted in the silver hydria. Remains of purple dye and small fragments of fabrics were traced among the highly fragmented bones of an adult individual cremated in high temperature. The amphora bears thin gilding and numerous incisions composing a representation covered by corrosion products and therefore unidentifiable for the time being. On the contrary, on the neck is visible an impressive gilded vegetal decoration. We hope that future work on analysis and conservation will offer insights on technological, archaeological and artistic aspects of the assemblage.
