The management of digital cultural material and the creation of digital applications for folklore : Terms for the maintenance and transmission of folklore heritage in the age of the Internet

The digitization, or filing, by the same institution, in dynamic form, with motion and sound, of folklore material in the shape of printed material and material objects, has created a new means of global communication and the transmission of knowledge, mainly by means of the Internet.However, this process also means the imposition of various ways and limits and/or raises new questions, such as the matter of electronic literacy and the resulting exclusion of a great number of people from the sources of information and knowledge on offer on the Internet.The author gives information on the digital applications employed by the Hellenic Folklore Research Centre, namely the Atlas of Greek Folklore, Travelling in Greece for Folklore Research and Beekeepers ’ Paths through Eastern Attica. He also offers information on plans for the development of advanced interactive sites which will employ multidimensional technological media.
