The writer investigates the minutes of the sessions of the School of Philosophy of the University of Athens, of February 1887, in which Nikolaos Politis was elected yfigitis (‘Reader') in Mythology. He reveals the extreme, if unsuccessful, reaction on the part of various conservative-minded professors. The man who was to found the discipline of folklore in 1909 in Greece was a ‘pioneering, radical personality’, who worked eagerly ‘towards the social and intellectual reform of Greece’.
