Abstract:
During the past two decades and on the boundary between two centuries, large museum projects took place throughout Greece, either regarding total renovations of existing buildings or the erection of new ones. According to dada from the Directorate of Museums, in 2009, 242 archaeological museums in total operated in Greece, a large number of which were either completely or partially renovated. The comparative and insurmountable advantage of allarchaeological museums in Greece as opposed to the other museums in the “western world” displaying ancient Greek artefacts is the fact that the exhibits of Greek museums derive from excavations and carefully stratified assemblages and are not collectible objects of unknown provenance or identity, as is the case with most exhibitsof Greek - and not only - antiquity in museums abroad. The present study presents the exhibition, publication and entertainment policy of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, which developed a quite extrovert policy since its re-opening in 2006, in order to reclaim its audience that has almost forsaken its existence after a four-year long break in operation. The exhibitions of the A.M.Th. are divided into six basic categories. A) archaeological exhibitions with ancient artefacts and accompanying material, b) archaeological exhibitions solely with posters and informative material, c) general interest exhibitions within the permanent archaeological exhibitions and referring to them, i.e. an exhibition within another one, and d) artistic exhibitions indirectly associated with archaeological material or ancient artefacts, e) digital technology exhibitions, f) exhibitions of a wider scientific or artistic interest. The programming o f temporary or new permanent exhibitions is absolutely targeted to create an attractive and constantly renewed museum, a living organism literally in the service of the Muses and not a dead “display-oriented fossil” in space and time. The organization of thirty-five exhibition in three years (2007-2009),is not insignificant by any means, as they were eleven or twelve exhibitions per year. 5-7 educative programmes take place on a daily basis in the renovated A.M.Th. for all school ages and thematic educative programmes for families on Sunday mornings. Due to increased demand of our educative programmes we ogranise a series of seminars for teachers in order to create their own educative programme with the help of the Museum’s experienced staff, fitting the needs and capabilities of each class. The museum is a par excellence place of perpetual education and within this frame we aim to create an open channel of communication with contemporary cultural and artistic creation, through parallel activities of all art forms. Constructive collaborations with many institutions of our city or abroad have proven to be very fertile in many aspects, creating a dense network of interactive events. Our main goal is to constantly keep the on their toes both the local society and the foreign visitors with the participating process in events of multiple interest. Within this frame of disseminating knowledge and information to the scientific community and the visitors of the A.M.Th., the museum has also developed an eager publishing activity. AJ1 temporary and permanent exhibitions are accompanied by relevant catalogues and printed material. The A.M.Th. has published in the years 2007-2012 twenty books of academic interest.
