Abstract:
A mong the various hand-axes, cleavers, scrapers, points etc, from Petralona cave (Northern Greece, Macedonia, Chalkidiki) a new tool type is described, which was unearthed in the upper stratigraphic layers. The code number is B-103 and it concerns a very heavybauxite rock, which weights 3708 grams and its volume reaches 1090cc. Compared to many other Petralona Lower Palaeolithic findings, it may be considered as more elaborated, since all of its surfaces are worked out. One of the edges (supposed to be the lower one) is transver ally and bifacially flaked, further retouched aswell. As a result a huge hacking-cutting edge of 120 mm is formed perpendicularly to its morphological axis. Once the flaking is transversal and not parallel to the edge, the diagnosis of a “Super-cleaver” must be excluded. Morphologically it reminds an enormous transverse scraper, classification that because of its weightand dimensions must again be rejected. Since such a big tool type has not being previously recorded, “Hyper-axe” is the proposed term for the new tool type. The main use of crashing bones for nutrition reasons are supposed and/or of preparing bone tools by cuttingthem longitudinally.
