Excavation - Acropolis - Platania 2009

On a hill just only 5 kilometres away from the present municipal district (region) of Platania called Kales or Acropolis, an acropolis was traced back having an ellipsoid- ground plan, which is an evidence of permanent habitation of this area dating back fromthe prehistoric period till the 6th century A.D. The whole defensive system is very interesting. A strong wall surrounds the whole (entire) acropolis. Besides, fortification surrounding walls have been traced back regarding that they would have been structured for betterorganization and safety of the whole acropolis area. Elements coming out o f the archaeological excavations so far, (coins, potsherds, jewellery, metal articles, metal-tools, stone-tools, weapons, statuettes, bonetools, glass-i pots) make us be completely sure and clear about the habitation of the area from the pre historicperiod till the Byzantine times. As the excavation research and works continuously make progress, they will probably bring to light new aspects of the everyday life inside the acropolis as well as the role of the whole acropolis played throughout the ages in this specific area.
