Using unpublished archival material, this paper throws light on the personality and work of the important British archaeologist, R. M. Dawkins, on his relations with Greek intellectuals and above all with Nikolaos Politis, founder of the Hellenic Folklore Society. The paper also casts light on the motives that led Politis to make Dawkins, an archaeologist, an honorary member of the Hellenic Folklore Society.
