Abstract:
The districi of Ambcloncs lies to the east of Eretria and outside the walls of the ancient city. The city cemetery, covering a large area, was located here. There has been no systematic excavation of the cemetery, and the graves that have been investigated at different times were discovered in the course of ploughing or carrying out public works (by the Electricity Board, etc.).In 1979-80 graves of the Classical period, which had suffered considerable damage from modern interference (ploughing etc.),were found on the building plots of G. Stefanoudakis and Or. Amanatidis, which are not far apart. Excavation results so far indicatethat we have clusters of graves bounded by enclosures, and grave monuments that are often severely damaged.
