Abstract:
The writer takes as his starting point a remark by Levi-Strauss, thatwestern cultures lack authenticity, to remark upon the current mass of developments, never before witnessed and the world-wide flood of information and knowledge. Despite this, or rather because of it, mankind is left without any definite orientation. This fact has created a Europe-wide phenomenon of nostalgia towards previous ages or towards folk cultures of the past. As regards folk cultures, a virtual culture has been created in a ‘second existence'.Tourism, too, has invented ‘choreographed authenticity', a world-wide phenomenon. In some cases, however, tourists create meaningful relationships with places that they regularly visit or where they settle permanently.
