The conceptual power of narrative : two conferences of the international society for folk narrative research as a point of departure

The paper deals with how the meaning and content of folk narrative developed and changed over the period between the 4th International Congress of the I.S.F.N.R,, held in Athens in 1964, and the 15th, also held there, in 2009, that is, a period of nearly half a century. At the first conference, which attracted 86 participants, discussion centred almost exclusively upon the two traditionally important forms of folk literature, that is folktale and legend. At the second conference, with 307 participants, there was clear interest in otherforms of narrative, involving migrants, beggars, the sick and mobile phone messages and so on. The dynamic of the Internet was also apparent, which is increasingly responsible for shaping ‘homo interneticus’.
