Abstract:
Five sites were excavated by the 16th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities in 2009: 1) A tower was excavated at Kounouklia” of Hagia Paraskevi, in the chora (territory) of ancient Skione. It is asquare building (6.5x6.5 m.) consisting of twofloors and a staircase. On the basis of the few finds discovered under its destruction layer in the interior and an early coin of Cassander (before 306 BC), found by the foundation of its walls, the tower dates to the end of the 4th century, in the period after the founding of Cassandreia. Hellenistic towers, fortified farmhouses and fortified small settlements are found in the Cassandra promontory (fortified settlements at Solenas and Polychrono, towers on the top of two mountains, Lekane of Fourka and Arapis at Paliouri, and finally, this tower built at a strategic site overlooking the sea to the south of Cassandra).2) A few pit graves and pit graves covered with tiles were excavated in the area of Polychrono. Most of them did not contain grave goods. Only one contained pottery dating to the 3rd century BC.3) The rescue excavation of a private building-ground in the area of Peucochori brought to light remains of the Hellenistic and the late Roman periods. The earliest building consists of three rooms and dates to the late Hellenistic period. On the basis of its finds, it was used for the production of trade amphorae of the “Parmeniskos group”, furthermore, there are also finds implying other rural activities, such as the production of honey. Next to this Hellenistic building the excavation yielded remains of an oil press dating to the late Roman period.4) Another late Hellenistic or early Roman workshop for the production of trade amphorae came to light in another private building-ground at Polychrono. The workshop was destroyed in the Roman period and the building was used until the early Christian period.5) Finally, a building complex dating from the early Roman to the 6th century AD was excavated in a private building-ground in the area of Paliouri. The building is situated by the sea and consists of two parts. Each one comprises many rooms. The building was used for a long period, while the excavational data suggest that the area was first inhabited in the Bronze Age. One of the two parts included workshops for the production of oil and honey.
