The second rennaissance enjoyed by the Thessaloniki Jewish communityin the beginning of the 20th century, owed much to the renewal of its educationalsystem, introduced by the establishment of the Alliance Israelite UniverselleSchools in 1873-1874.This study deals with the internal and external factors that contributedto this change and the development of the new educational system and itsinstitutions in Thessaloniki. It also discusses the ideological and economicimpact that the new educational wave exercised upon the society and cultureof this exceptional Jewish community which was to all Jews “The Metropolisof Israel”.
