Abstract:
This study is based on rich archival material, most of which has appearedin print while the rest remains unpublished. One aim of the paper is to describecommercial relations between Wallachia and the Ottoman Empire between1791 and 1821. A significant amount of Wallachia’s products was absorbedby Ottoman markets at below market prices, as part of its obligations to theOttoman Empii e. Starting in 1744, a series of imperial sultanic promulgationsbegan to limit such abuses. However, in addition to the above obligations, there was a substantialand consistent Wallachian export trade with the Ottoman Empire, whichgreatly increased towards the end of the period, particularly after the Treatyof Andrinople (1829).
