From the sherd to the vessel : an initial approach to the pottery from neolithic Dispilio

The study of the pottery from the lake-settlement of Dispilio aims to the deter­ mination of:a) the stratigraphical-chronological horizon, in which it belongs of,b) its position in the site’s process of production in the communal as well as the trans-communal level,c) the social value of its use,d) the technological achievements, which concern and define it.In this framework, the numerous neolithic sherds are studied not only as thebasis of statistical informations, but mainly as means for the restoration of whole vessels. A multi -para-metrical approach of the pottery is adopted, which, beyond the conservation, includes also the determination of its economical and social role through the localization of the technological inventions and the clays used for its fabrication, the experimental construction of both a kiln and vessels, as also as the determination of the catalogue of forms and the use of the vessels, their spatial distribution, and the meaning of decorated pottery.
