Abstract:
Excavations this year were confined to the northern part of the citadel, where itwas found that the stone infrastructure of the brick wall had been coated with clayto protect it from erosion. The fortification of the citadel, as of the city too, datesto the reign of Kassandros and has no earlier phase. This is another reason why thecity cannot be Aigai, which, as the Macedonians’ capital city, would have beenfortified from at least as early as the sixth century AD.The most noteworthy finds this year are: fragments of moulds for relief skyphoi, clay loom weights, fragments of figurines, bronze coins, bronze doornails, ironkeys, iron arrowheads, and an iron ring with a representation of Athena. Mostinteresting of all were parts of the iron fittings from a shield. The system of pits found in the citadel, together with other finds from the samearea (millstones, pestles and mortars, pigments), lead us to conclude that there wasa plant here for dyeing textiles. These workshops co-existed with the citadel’stextile mills, the work of which is attested by the large numbers of clay and leadloom weights, clay spindle whorls, and holes for supporting the feet of looms, whichhave been found on the same site.
