Abstract:
As part of the rescue excavations being conducted in anticipation of theconstruction of the Mavrovouni-Apsalos road in Almopia province, Pellaprefecture, some tumuli were explored which enrich our knowledge of the area’sIron Age profile. More specifically, one new type of tumulus was investigated atVerpen near Apsalos (Fig. 1; PI. 1), which yielded the funerary amphora shown inFig. 2 and PI. 2. We also investigated nine tumuli from another cemetery to thenorth of the ancient settlement at Nea Zoi (PI. 3(tm)T). The tumuli took the formof low cairns covering single-chambered tombs (PI. 4) with an entrance and adromos at the east. The burial offerings (PL 5) represent the usual categories of theIron Age and the Archaic period.Apart from the rescue excavations, work was also carried out on the site of theancient settlement at Aloros (Fig. 3; PI. 6) in the framework of the project for theDevelopment of the Archaeological Sites in Almopia, which is funded by theMunicipality of Aridaia. The investigations collected data about the duration ofhabitation in the settlement (PI. 7, 8, earlier finds) and its fortifications (Figs. 4, 5;PI. 9). We also investigated small areas of the Hellenistic period (such as theworkshop in PI. 10), which yielded the movable finds in PI. 11-13.
