Abstract:
As part of the development of the archaeological site at Pella, investigationswere carried out in 1997 by mean of trial trenches in three insulae of the ancientcity, in the area where the plans have scheduled facilities for visitors, in the southeastpart of the archaeological site, south-east of the Museum. Two finds from these investigations are presented here as being of specialinterest. The first is connected with the intensive productive activity at Pella in the LateHellenistic period and was found in the north-west section of the south block insidea metal workshop. It consists of five intact clay moulds with the cores inside, whichwere used to make objects in cast bronze by the “lost wax” technique, which hasbeen widely practised ever since ancient times. The bronze objects produced fromthese moulds were furniture fittings, probably feet for symposium couches. The datafurnished by the find relate to the first stage of the manufacturing process, i.e. themaking of the core, its wax casing, the clay moulds, and the firing of the moulds. Sofor the first time, excavational data from Pella have considerably enriched ourknowledge about the well-developed Macedonian metalworking techniques. The second find was uncovered in the north-east section of the north block andconsists in an organised baths complex, the oldest ever found in northern Greeceand the first to be found in the ancient city, in an area of intensive industrial andcommercial activity. It has chambers with four rectangular and one circularbathtub, which were filled with cold water, and a square chamber with eighteen claywash-basins along the sides, which the bathers used sitting down and which probablysupplied hot water. The floors both of the bathtubs and wash-basins themselves andof the chambers are paved with pebbles, pieces of marble and tile, and rubblestones, and covered with a thick layer of hydraulic mortar. In the west section of the bathsthere are a cistern and a furnace, for storing and heating the water respectively. Theexistence of an open space in front of the baths suggests that the complex maybelong to the earliest building phase of a larger, possibly public, complex.
