Abstract:
In the Hamidye district of Thessaloniki, the renowned area of the villas thatbegan from the White Tower and reached down to the Villa Allatini, the uppermiddle class of the city build their “towers” after 1890. Among them the mansionof the well known Jewish merchant, of Italian nationality, Dino Iosif FernandezDiaz, known as Casa Bianca, stands out.The villa was designed by the well known Italian engineer Pierro Arrigoni(1856-1940), has the characteristics of the type of the country villa formed in thesecond half of the 19th century, with clear references to art nouveau and the neorenaissancestyle. It is arranged in main two levels, semi-basement and attic. Theinterior of the villa develops around the central living room-hall passage, while theauxiliary staircase of the tower leads to the secondary spaces of the mansion, thekitchen, the bathrooms. The asymmetrical plan is expressed in the organization ofthe masses and of the facades, where the tower-like volume of the secondary stairwellis a dominant feature, while the front facade is organized as three parts, withthe main entrance in the middle. The wooden roofs of the volumes are projectedoutwards and form large decorative cantilevers. The impression is completed withthe timber elements of the balconies, where eastern influences are visible. Expensivefloors, elaborate wooden door and window frames, ornate plaster decorativeelements and european furnishings complete the interior of the house. In 1976 it is proclaimed a cultural monument by the Ministry of Culture.Nevertheless, its systematic and brutal destruction had already started, resulting toextensive damages of the internal spaces. In 1990 it becomes a property of theMunicipality of Thessaloniki, and in 1992-1994 a study for its rehabilitation as partof a research programme is carried out by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, with Professor N. Moutsopoulos, architect, as Head of Project, and the participationof Professors G. Penelis and M. Papadopoulos in the structural investigationof the matter. The rehabilitation of Casa Bianca began in August 1994 and was completed inNovember 1997. The project was realized —carried out by Public Enterprise—Organization for Urban and Housing Development (Ar. Dimoudis, Ath. Theophanides,K. Alexiades) under the supervision of the Municipality of Thessaloniki (Ap.Papayiannopoulos, D. Kambalambides) and the 4th Trust for Recent Monuments(H. Zarkada), while the costs (a total of 750.000.000 drs) were covered by theOrganization of the Cultural Capital of Europe “Thessaloniki 1997”.The new use of Casa Bianca as a building for cultural activities and eventsdemands respect to the monument, which is going to function as an exhibit in itself.
