Abstract:
The reuse of a historical building is a question to which specialists have applied their minds ever since ancient times. One category of buildings whose management and use has changed over time is the monastery dependencies in Halkidiki. Considerablechanges have been wrought upon them since 1922 and the settling of therefugees. The 4th Ephorate of Modern Monuments addressed some sporadic efforts to reuseauxiliary and dependency buildings in 1994, on the basis of a number of principles and approaches. In Nea Moudania, a small outbuilding was restored in the large developed olive grove of Hadji Osman, where the village association holds its cultural events. Thereis a bar-cum-cafe in a two-storey building (originally a storeroom) belonging toVatopedi Monastery on the sea-front at Nea Triglia. The initiative for theseinterventions came from the respective local authorities. As regards the Vatopedian complex at Nea Triglia, the 4th Ephorate began theproject for re-use by drawing up a complete restoration plan for the main building. The proposal for the new uses involves a variety of cultural functions, so that thespace may be made available not only to the villagers, but also to the general public. The restoration work began in 1996, with funding from the Ministry ofCulture, and is continuing.
