Geo-archaeological investigations in lake Vistonis, Thrace
Abstract:
This year, in the context of the archaeological survey of Aegean Thrace which wasinitiated in 1991 (Efstratiou 1991, 425, 1992, 654), attention was focused on the lake Vistonisin the Rhodope plain (Fig. 1). The paper examines the possibility that in 6000 BCthe lake might have been an area of river confluence with associated levees and floodplain, constituting an attractive area for early human occupation of the region which is stillmissing from the archaeological record (Mesolithic, early Neolithic). This was attempted through an exploratory sub-bottom profiling sonar survey whichwas designed to sample the range of suspected sedimentary environments within theconfines of the lake. A Geo-Star Sub-bottom Reflection Profiler was used for the purpose. The results, though preliminary, revealed important sedimentary features such as wellstratified horizontal basal sequences, complex dipping beds associated with the delta orlevee formations of the rivers, and deltaic deposits. Locating a spring erosion pit was ofparticular interest because of the implications for human occupation prior to the marinetransgression and lake formation. The preliminary survey has yielded such clear records that a more systematic andextensive commitment to fuller study could be justified from both a geological/sedimentologicaland potentially, an archaeological perspective.
