Abstract:
A trial excavation in field No. 1377A at Byadoudi, NW of Epanomi, broughtto light parts of the ruins of a three-aisled Early Christian basilica. Morespecifically, the excavation revealed most of the exterior of the sanctuary apseand its S shoulder, a cruciform brick-built enkainion in the sanctuary, presumablyunder the altar, the bed of the foundations of the NE comer of the Naisle, a long stretch of the foundation of the S stylobate, part of the brick-pavedfloor of the S aisle, the NW and SW comers of the W exterior wall of the narthex, and much of its brick-paved floor. The excavated basilica combines Oriental and Hellenistic features andseems to have been quite a sumptuous building, with opus sectile floors, sculptured architectural decoration, and marble revetment and mosaics on thewalls. However, the ancient remains that have been uncovered have been badlydamaged by theft of the stones and by ploughing. The church must have servedthe needs of a settlement, the existence of which is clearly attested by thediscovery of a cemetery at Limori, approximately 1 km NW of the site of thisyear’s excavation. The surface data suggest that the settlement would haveoccupied the space between the two sites and to the S of the basilica. Accordingto the local people, until a few years ago the area to the E of the basilica wasflooded every year by the water carried down by the nearby seasonal rivers, which would mie out any form of settlement on that side. When the work inside the basilica has been completed and more extensivesystematic investigations have been conducted outside the basilica to the S andW and in the wider area, the remaining questions will undoubtedly be clarified.
