Abstract:
A small section of the sanctuary apse and the E end of the S wall survived above natural ground level, both belonging to a second phase when the original mud-built aisleless structure was rebuilt with lime mortar. We cleared the interior of earth fill as much as 1.50 m deep and uncovered a NE pier with traces of frescowork on its W face. The NW corner of the church yielded a grave with a Charonian coin (aspros trachys of Isaac II Angelos, AD 1185-95).The quantities of intact handmade cover-tiles and iron nails from the roof trusses clearly indicated that the church had a timber roof in the second phase at least. In the narthex we found an inscribed rectangular stone measuring 1.04 x0.34x0.34 m, which had been re-used as the lintel over the entrance from the narthex to the naos. The inscription is a dedication to the gods and the city of the Lykaians by the father of Flavius Fabricianus in gratitude (τή πατρίδι θρεπτήριον) (PI. 26-8; Fig. 6)
