Abstract:
Excavations continued at Nea Philadelphia for the 4th year, uncovering theremains of buildings and a cemetery of the Iron Age.The most striking of the building remains, which are on a table-shapedelevation, is a large 4-roomed rectangular building, which had previously been2 separate buildings. To the S of it was found a large chamber for storage jars, while to the SE is an open area with stone structures for preparing foodstuffs.Further away a terrace was constructed, filling in a natural depression. Thebuilding remains make up a small rural establishment, which may have beenconnected with those who wielded power at that time. The Iron-Age cemetery is striking for its size, the closely-packed dispositionof the graves, and, particularly, its strict demarcation. Approximately 1,350graves have been uncovered so far. The most common practice is inhumation, though 54 cinerary urns have also been found. The graves are pit graves and cistgraves, and there are also a few jar burials. They contain clay pots, bronze andiron jewellery, and iron tools. Three gold mouthpieces were found in the Ssection of the cemetery.
