Abstract:
This study presents the best preserved district uncovered during the excavation of Petres, the so-called ‘Fountain district’. It is located to the E of the hill on which the Hellenistic city stood, and, apart from some luxurious residences, has also yielded: a public fountain with a water pipe passing under the main street; a sanctuary of Zeus containing a central altar and identified by an inscription; a public storeroom with 16 enormous storage jars; and some areas where grain was prepared for milling. These buildings were probably connected with the sanctuary of Zeus, who in this case was worshipped in his capacity of karpodotos.
