Abstract:
The excavations which have been carried out over the last ten years in the vicinity of the modern irrigation channel at Pella, where the nucleus of the earliest city (late fifth - early fourth century BC) is located, has revealed four building complexes on sections of four insulae. These complexes are in a central part of the city and were accessible directly from a monumental road setting out from the harbour and crossing the city. The morphological characteristics of the buildings and the finds revealed by the excavations show them to have been of a sacred nature. They all have large open-air spaces and abundant installations to ensure and distribute a supply of water, which would had been necessary for its purifying capacity and also to meet the needs of large numbers of people. Banquets were given in rooms with mosaic floors, on which portable wooden couches would have been set. In all the buildings workshops have been recognising, confirming the hy pothesis that items were made and sold there, and the main cult areas are integrated into the insulae and not accentuated in any particular way.The two complexes to which there was direct access from the monumental road are connected with the cult of the healer-god Darron, as inscriptions have confirmed, while the other two provided services for the activities that took place at the meetings on feast days.Although the cult of Darron-Asclepius at Pella was adapted to the needs of the local population, the influence of the major centres of the god’s cult can be detected in these building complexes.
