Abstract:
The Thessaloniki baths are the only Byzantine baths to have survived in relatively good condition in Greece. The building is in four parts, consisting of an ante-chamber, the tepidarium and calidarium, a water tank and a hypocaust system. The building is ge - nerally rectangular in shape, with overall external dimensions of 12.5x15.7 m. The calidarium, flanked by recesses, was roofed with cupolas, while the other areas were vaulted. The study of the building carried out in order to shore up and restore it re vealed that this was a double, mid-Byzantine baths whose construction made use of the walls of an earlier structure, which had survived up to a height of 1.5 m.The original form of the building was seriously impaired by the extensive repairs carried out in the late Byzantine period and by the other interventions which followed before the baths finally closed in 1940.
