Ten years ago, when the institution of archaeological meetings in northern Greece was just beginning, it was seen as useful to present the known facts about the wall of the city of Edessa, since investigation of that monumental structure had by that time accumulated sufficient data to allow the formulation of an initial overall picture. Ten years later, as part of the rescue excavations being carried out by Inspectorate XVII of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities on the acropolis of Edessa and in the lower city, investigation of the wall oc cupied a major part of the efforts being made, in parallel with exploration of the graveyards, in order to allow final determination of the boundaries of the city and the basic axes of access to it. More specifically, approximately 200 metres of the fortifications have been uncovered and investigated, while the excavation of ten building sites and fields revealed some 500 tombs of all the periods. The limited amount of investigation done in the interior of the acropolis has provided data about its stratigraphy together with a certain amount of information about the urban organisation of the city, hitherto completely unknown.After a brief report on the above, the presentation will deal with the facts concerning the earliest period of the pre-Christian area which can be extracted from a study of the excavations carried out in the past and more recently.
