Abstract:
During the excavations of the last ten years, our hypothesis about the location of the sanctuary of Zeus was confirmed by the discovery of a royal epistle from Antigonus. In the sanctuary of Demeter, monumental altars were found to the east of some of the small temples, despite the fact that offering tables had been used in their interior. It is now certain, as demonstrated by excavation of the walls, that the fourth century BC city was square in shape. The Agora of Cassander’s time has been identified, beneath the Forum of the Imperial period. The most outstanding find in the eastern insulae of the city was the Dionysus villa. Its architecture, mosaic floors and sculptures provided a wealth of evidence to contribute to our understanding of the building as a whole and our ability to reconstruct it. This urban villa is an excellent example of the life style of the upper social class during the Imperial period. The selection of themes for the mosaics and the variety of the sculptures (consisting both of portaits and of contemporary and historical idealised subjects) are characteri stic of an age in which, after 300 years of conquest, the process of Romanisation of the urban centres of Greece and Asia Minor began, while at the same time the Classical culture was undergoing a renaissance.
