Abstract:
sanctuary dated from the Archaic to the Hellenistic period has been ex cavated in the peninsula of Mt. Athos. Two buildings have come to light so far, while the excavation of a third one started last year. The first building that was excavated dates to the late Archaic period. It is an oikos whose best finds are the remains of its roof: painted tiles and antefi - xes and terracotta statues of Nikai that decorated the roof. The latter are excel lent samples of late Archaic sculpture and recall similar examples found at sanctuaries of S. Greece (Olympia etc.).The second building is a temple dated to the Hellenistic period. It consists of a pronaos and a cella equipped with three entrances, a built bench and a ce remonial hearth inside. Two marble heads, one of Helios and a second of a young woman were found by the threshold of the eastern and main entrance of the cella. The finds from the temples do not provide enough evidence concerning the identity of the deity or deities worshipped at the sanctuary during the Archaic period. However, the finds from the Hellenistic temple suggest that Helios or Apollo-Helios was the main deity worshipped at the building, probably along with others, such as Artemis-Selene or deities who were not immediately rela ted to Helios-Apollo.Finally the periods of use of the sanctuary are clearly distinguished: it was built in the late Archaic period by the inhabitants of the city of Sane, it sur vived into the Classical period, since there are fragments of 5th-century in - scriptions and finally, the sanctuary was incorporated in the city of Uranopolis which was built in 315 B.C.
