Abstract:
The South Tumulus stands in a hilly area approximately 3 km. SSW of Trilofo. The excavation of the tumulus has been proceeding since 1992 and its objectives include reconstruction of the productive areas of the settlement, determination of the factors which caused it to take shape, a stratigraphical approach to a long period of time (from Middle Neolithic II to the Iron Age), and expansion of our knowledge about the earliest phases in the Neolithic era in Central Macedonia. In parallel with the excavation, surface research is being conducted both in the settlement itself and in the surrounding area. The surface research has demonstrated that, with some interruptions, the site was inhabited from Middle Neolithic II down to the Byzantine period. The landfill of the Neolithic era has created a low mound on top of an extensive low hill which slopes from east to west. In the Bronze Age, the settlement shrank until it occupied only the highest point in the site, where its fill created a tumulus which has a height of 16 metres and a diameter of approximately 80 metres today. In the Iron Age, habitation extended not only to the tumulus but also to the natural platform to the north, while in the Hellenistic and Roman periods the settlement also extended to the south of the tumulus, occupying an area of some 30 hectares. The excavation trenches cover part of the top of the tumulus and its west side. On the summit, it was discovered that there had been an ekistic phase dating from the historical period, three phases in the Iron Age (Geometrical period), one phase in Late Helladic A, and one phase in the Early Bronze Age. The trenches on the side of the tumulus yielded traces of Early Bronze Age buildings, while a trench at the base of the tumulus revealed part of a structure dating from the Geometric period.Since the exploration of the site continues, it is expected that the Neolithic fill will be excavated in the trenches at the base of the tumulus.
