Archontiko excavation 1994 (sector II)
Abstract:
In 1994, exploration of the prehistoric sector (sector II) focused on the Eslope and the flat top of the Arhondiko mound. The purpose was to continue the investigation of the Bronze Age phases that came to light in 1993 and arecharacterised by: i) the presence of stone-built structures and sgraffito ware; and ii) pile-dwellings. The 1994 excavation enabled us to make the following observations. I) On the flat top of the mound, the layer of stone-built structures is particularly important. It is characterised by sgraffito ware with a rich thematic stock that may be compared with pottery from Axiohori, Kalindria, and Perivolaki which Heurtley dates to the so-called Middle Bronze Age. C14 dating of a sample dated the phase to 2118-1937 BC.ii) The habitation phase with the pile-dwellings on the E slope of the mound is earlier, and C14 dating has given 2199-2135, 2275-2139, and2196-2050 BC. The closed groups of ceramic ware located here are particularly important for the study of the pottery in this layer. They are grey, undecorated wares, the most typical shape being a small amphora with elevated handles. Another important find in this layer was the jar burial of a child, of great value for the study of burial customs in this phase.
