Vergina 1994 : the sanctuary of the mother of the Gods

In the course of excavations in the Metroon at Vergina in 1994, three main places were investigated, i) In the SE area to the E of the large double space(1990), a portico was located (A-Δ) with stone bases for the stone columns (1stHellenistic phase), ii) In the NW area, a small part of a large area with strong walls was excavated. Further investigations here were postponed till next year, iii) The most important part of this year’s excavation proved to be the NE section of the large building, where a covered area entered from a long, narrow passage was excavated. This private room contained a rich trove of figurines representing various deities (synteleia), together with other objects connected with the cult of the Mother of the Gods. The new discoveries, in the form both of buildings and of movable finds, considerably enrich our knowledge of the goddess’s cult and allow us to make some initial suggestions regarding the form of the great Hellenistic building that was the Metroon
