The neolithic settlement at Makriyalos, 1994

Excavation of the Neolithic settlement at Makriyalos continued for the second year in 1994. Work started in 1993, owing to recent major public works in the north of Pieria prefecture. The settlement is estimated to cover a total area of 50 ha., of which 6 ha. have been explored. Two main building phases are distinguishable. In phase I, dated to the start of the Late Neolithic, the settlement was surrounded by two trenches. Remnants of habitation were found within the enceinte. These comprise pits of various sizes dug in the ground, the purpose of which will be ascertained largely from an analysis of the finds. In phase II, there were changes in the intracommunal organisation. This phase dates to the end of the Late Neolithic, and the space was more densely inhabited than in phase I, with circular, semi-subterranean buildings.The end of phase II saw the appearance of the apsidal megaron, which was amajor innovation in its time. The two phases were dated on the basis of the large quantities of pottery that were collected from both phases. Phase I is characterized by black burnished pottery that corresponds to the Larissa phase in Thessaly, and phase II by painted pottery of the classic Dimenian type. A rich trove of other finds has been collected. They are already being studied and analysed by a team of archaeologists and the initial findings will soon be assisting a final interpretation of the data
