Abstract:
In autumn 1994, excavation began in plot 480 in the community of Makriyalos, in the N cemetery at Pydna. The site began to be used as a cemetery in the Late Bronze Age. A trench some 40 m long, which probably marked the boundary of a settlement, indicates that its use changed in the Early Iron Age. In the Archaic period, however, it was used as a cemetery again until the late 4th or early 3rd c. BC.The most common type of grave is the pit-grave with a wooden sarcophagus or a wooden cover resting on a surrounding ledge. There are also a large number of jar burials of infants; many tile-graves; a few stone sarcophagi; some cremation burials in shallow pits; and one instance of burnt bones deposited in a clay hydria. Many graves had been disturbed by subsequent burials, and many of themhad been desecrated as early as ancient times. The excavation continues
