Abstract:
The excavation is of an exploratory nature and is being carried out in the framework of a programme for promoting the antiquities and incorporating them into an archaeological park. The trenches in the table yielded evidence of habitation in the ancient period in the form of a fragment of a storage jar destroyed in the Late Archaic period and three pits. The groups of sherds found in these trenches include fragments of vessels from the Iron Age, the Late Archaic and the Early Classical period. In the part of the cemetery that covers an area of 150 m to the E of the settlement, 28 graves of the 6th and 5th cc. BC were uncovered. The sole burial custom is inhumation and the site was used for the burial of both adults and children. Most of the graves are pit-graves and there is a striking absence of coins. The interesting pottery comes from local workshops and from workshops in the E Ionian area, such as Samos; but most of it is from Attica and Corinth. The grave goods also include jewellery and iron weapons
