Excavation of a cemetery at Limori, Epanomi

A brief trial excavation in plot 1417 (owned by Nikolaos Telioussis) at Limori, NW of the village of Epanomi, yielded a group of five graves of various types: two built cist-graves with a pitched cover of limestone slabs; two cist graves, one built and the other lined with marble, both with a flat cover; and a tile grave. All five were oriented E-W. All the graves have a head-rest on the floor at the W end. The built cist graves have an opening in the narrow E end, sealed with a vertical limestone slab. The burial was performed through this opening. It is particularly interesting to note the pedimental roofing of two of the cist-graves, which is a rarely encountered morphological feature. All the graves had been used for several burials and contained a significant number of grave goods, such as (mostly bronze) jewellery, coins, and, particularly, unpainted pottery, such as cups, unguent aria, oinochoes, and cookingpots. The finds show that the graves were in use throughout the 4th and in the early 5th c. AD.A geophysical survey indicated that the graves belong to an extensive cemetery, which, as the variety and quality of the grave structures show, was used by a fairly prosperous society. Surface investigations in the area located abundant stones, tiles, and sherds of the Early Christian period at Byadoudi (‘little well’), some 450 m SE of the sit site of the graves, the probable location of the settlement to which they belonged
