Abstract:
Τhis year we continued the excavation at the sanctuary at Nea Rhoda of Chalcidice, by the canal of Xerxes. We concentrated on the research of the building which had been discovered the previous year. The excavation yielded a building (dim. 17.80x10.20m.) with E-W orientation and entrance from the east. It consists of two rooms, apronaos and a cella and dates to the late 4th or early 3rd century B.C. The building was equipped with three entrances, one monumental from the east (to the pronaos and the cella) and two more from the south and the west (to the cella). A pile of stones mixed with traces of fire and shells and the remains of a table for offerings were discovered inside the cella. Furthermore, the excavation of the cella yielded metal objects, black-glazed sherds, many octahedral ceremonial vessels, a portable clay altar and many bronze coins of Uranopolis. The discovery of the above, as well as the discovery of the two marble heads, a female and one of Helios (sun), the previous year imply that the building was a temple dedicated to Helios (sun) or Apolo-Helios.
