Abstract:
Though not completed, two rescue excavations on Thasos in 1994 make it possible to offer some comments on the history of the island in the Early Christian and Byzantine period, an age about which relatively little is known in comparison with the Ancient period. More specifically, the excavation of a baths complex at Skala Rahoni located a Middle Byzantine phase of the late 10th to early 11th c., and a plot in Limenas is the site of an Early Christian basilica, in the nave of which a small aisleless church was built in the Middle Byzantine period. Hitherto, the reactivation of Limenas in the 11th c. had been attested chiefly by numismatic finds. The discovery of a Middle Byzantine church (9th-11th cc.) is therefore of particular importance for the history of the island in the Middle Byzantine period
