Vergina 1993 : the sanctuary of the mother of the Gods

The 1993 excavation period produced important new data regarding thedating and the structural form of the sanctuary of the Mother of the Gods, asalso the cult of the goddess. The coins and the abundant pottery indicate twochronological phases: the late Classical (4th c. BC) and the Hellenistic, thelatter comprising two periods, the 3rd c. BC and the 1st half of the 2nd c. BC.The sanctuary was burnt down in the middle of the century. Clay figurinesfound in the distinctive double chambers supplement our picture of thegoddess.
