Abstract:
In 1993, a rescue dig was carried out at Nea Ζοϊ and Edessa in Pella prefecture. At Nea Ζοϊ four trial sections produced evidence of constant habitation on Teriklia Hill to the E of the modern village. The earliest finds date to the end of the Early Bronze Age, and the settlement flourished in the Late Bronze Age. In the Iron Age, the site was used as a cemetery, as is revealed by the earliest finds and the excavation of section E. The last period of habitation waste Hellenistic period, as is revealed by coins and pottery. The excavation of Ra'ikos field in the area of the N cemetery of the lower city of ancient Edessa brought to light 130 graves and provided fresh data for research into the city's history. The evidence essentially relates to the 4th c. BC, though the site was used as a cemetery until the early Christian period. The glass seal with a representation of the laurel-crowned Apollo shown in Plate 10 is from a tomb lavishly furnished with grave goods from the mid-4th c. BC.
