Excavation at Archontiko, 1993
Abstract:
Excavation in the prehistoric sector of Arhondiko in 1993 concentrated on the E slope of the mound, where earth fill from the Early Bronze Age was located and investigated. Stone footings of dwellings were investigated in sections P, Σ, and T, not a common occurrence in our as yet limited and fragmentary picture of the settlements of this period in Macedonia. Most of the pottery in these sections was from the Early Bronze Age, with a category of incised ware with traces of white paste being of particular interest. The remains of an Early Bronze Age pile dwelling were discovered insection Π, with all its equipment intact on the ground. Four clay-built structures (hearths and ovens) were found here, 12 intact vessels, a few broken vessels, and some charred seeds. In section Y, where the remains of another pile dwelling were located, ajar burial was found, containing the remains of a young child. The pottery from these two sections dates to the Early Bronze Age, but has no incised decoration
