Abstract:
Excavations in a block NW of the sanctuary of Aphrodite and the Mother of the Gods uncovered a building complex with two principal construction phases. To the earlier phase (late 4th - early 3rd c. BC) belong two circular chambers, with a diameter of 8.8 m and an inlaid marble floor, and a very long chamber to the S of them. To the later phase (late 2nd c. BC) belongs a large workshop for the manufacture of clay objects. The fact that the complex was a workshop is attested by 6 kilns (one rectangular in plan, one elliptical, and four circular),some lumps of pure clay and apparatus for processing it, middens, wasters, storage jars containing vessels, moulds for relief vessels and figurines, and stamps for impressing motifs onto relief moulds. The workshop supplied its wares to the city's great commercial centre, the agora, to meet the growing need for rapid large-scale ceramic production
