Abstract:
In the summer of 1992, construction work began for the second branch of the Thessaloniki-Katerini national highway, the new Athens-Thessaloniki railway line, and the natural gas pipeline. The earthworks necessitated a large number of archaeological excavations, most of them extensive. By the end of1993, the following sites had been thoroughly investigated. 1. Katerini. Second branch of the national highway. Group of graves from the Roman period. 2. Korinos: Krania. Gas pipeline. Early Hellenistic settlement. 3. Korinos: Toumbes. Second branch of the national highway. Bronze Age settlement and graves.4. Kitros: Louloudia. Settlement and graves from the Late Bronze Age tothe early Christian period. 5. Makriyalos: Aeroyefira. Second branch of the national highway and new railway line. Settlement from the Late Bronze Age, the 5th c. BC, and the Roman period. Also graves from the Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods next to an ancient road. 6. Makriyalos: Ayiasma. Second branch of the national highway and new railway line. On the site of the extensive Neolithic settlement, two ancient roads are flanked by graves of the Classical and Roman periods. Rectangular pits connected with the cultivation of vines were also found, and to the N of the settlement a considerable stretch of the Pydna aqueduct, made of claypipes, was investigated. 7. Makriyalos: Dexameni. New railway line. Group of graves from the Roman period and one cist grave from the Early Iron Age. 8. Methone. New railway line. A few tile graves from the Roman period were investigated on two sites in the area of ancient Methone
