Abstract:
During the second excavation period, under extremely difficult conditions, a major archaeological site was uncovered in Diikitiriou Square. To the E of a section of a late Roman road, a mid-4th c. early Christian building on top of the late Hellenistic and Roman phases was gradually explored. The movable finds located in the earth fill indicate that it was used for a very long time. Excavations so far have revealed nine rooms, one of them with a mosaic floor and another, the largest (probably unroofed), with a built fountain in the centre. The S room incorporates a semi-subterranean barrel-vaulted structure of the Romen period. Two more brief excavations were carried out in Ayiou Dimitriou Street tothe N of the square, one between Venizelou and Papayeoryiou Streets and the other across the whole width of the road at the S-W corner of the Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace. The first revealed the remains of late Byzantine private dwellings, the second an impressive early Christian bath-house. Its first construction phase dates to the mid-5th c., and the second, founded on the ruins of the first, to the latter part of the early Christian period
