Abstract:
Building Στ was completely uncovered, though there was no in-depth investigation of the interior. It is a vaulted structure, open at the S end, and built with large pebbles and vertical slabs at the ends of the long sides. It is14.27 m long and 5.4 m wide, and must be the oldest devotional section of the Sanctuary of Poseidon. The sherds found on the floor inside and the relevant layer outside date it to the Sub-Mycenaean or early Geometric period. Sacrifices were made inside by burning offerings of animal parts and seashells, with the result that a high altar of ash was formed over the central part of the building. Building E of this altar was a retaining wall made up of the remnants of the sacrifices and the layers of small stones that held them back. Among the stones were found sherds from a Sub-Geometric Eretrian cantharusand the handle of an amphora with an incised inscription. In the Classical period, sacrifices were performed in the open area to the S of the vaulted building Στ and around two altars, of which the one nearer to the Protogeometric vaulted building was dedicated to Poseidon Pontius by Calchas, son of Lysus. Clay pipes for libations, either made with two curved roof-tiles or with their interior filled with pebbles, surround the sacrificai area from the E or the S, positioned in pairs in straight lines
